GALENA, Ill. -- Lester Alan Johnson, 54, of Galena, died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at home. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Grace Episcopal Church, Hill and Prospect Streets, Galena, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday. A supper and celebration of Lester's life will follow services at Tur-ner Hall, 115 S. Bench St., Galena. Interment of his ashes will be held at a later date. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is in charge of arrangements. He was born on Sept. 18, 1954, in Peoria, Ill., son of Delmer and Audrey (Schaefer) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm in Mapleton, Ill. Lester received a bachelor of science in forestry from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana and was certified as a soil scientist by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. He was employed for 28 years as a resource conservationist for the Jo Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District and was a founding member of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation. He was an active participant and board member in many associations throughout the county, including the Jo Daviess County Planning Commission, Apple Canyon Lake Association and the Galena Community Garden. He was involved in the restoration and beautification of Recreation Park in Galena and numerous other civic endeavors. He was a keen observer of the weather and made a hobby of studying climate trends. He married Carmen Ferguson on Sept. 4, 1989, at Grace Episcopal Church, Galena. He and Carmen shared a love of growing vegetables and flowers, and the gardens and ponds at their home are a showcase of productivity and beauty. Lester loved to fish. One of his favorite pastimes was to take his pontoon boat out on the Mississippi River and anchor it in the lee of an island, where he and Carmen would throw in a line and enjoy supper at sunset with good friends. In addition to his beloved wife, Carmen, he is survived by his parents; a brother, John (Irene) Johnson, of Los Altos, Calif.; sisters, Shirley Johnson, of San Francisco, Marilyn (Van Eden) Johnson, of Kirkland, Wash., Carol (Fernando) Ossandon, of Urbana, Ill.; 23 nieces and nephews; and legions of friends, all who will miss him dearly. |
LEXINGTON - The funeral of Carl E. Jones, 82, of rural Lexington will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Musselman-Beck Funeral Home, Lexington, the Rev. Robert Adelsperger officiating. Burial will be Park Lawn Cemetery, Danvers. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home. He died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday (June 18, 1998) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. Memorials may be made to the Lexington Ambulance Service. He was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Danvers, the son of William and Maude Waller Jones. He married Ruth L. Waugler on Dec. 1, 1933, in Terre Haute, Ind. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Carolyn J. Collins, Terre Haute; and Linda L. Stone, Normal; three sons, Donald L. Jones, Bellflower; Robert C. Jones of rural Lexington; and Lawrence Jones, Portland, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one great-grandson. Mr. Jones was a tool and dye maker for General Electric. He retired from GE in 1978 after 25 years of service. He graduated from Danvers High School. |
Charles F. Jones, 87, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Jan. 7, 1915, in Oliver Springs, he had been a lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Jones retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division where he had worked as a machinist for 26 years. He was a member of New Mountain View Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Aytes Jones; two daughters, Sue Capps and her husband, Jeff, of Oak Ridge, and Angela West and her husband, John, of Knoxville; two sons, Mack F. Jones and his wife, Darlene, of Midwest City, Okla., and John C. Jones of Oak Ridge; five grandchildren, Michael Killaly, Christopher Killaly and Kimberly Killaly, all of Pennsylvania, and Tracy Jones and Tammy Jones, both of Oklahoma; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Jones is also survived by two brothers, John Paul Jones and his wife, Clara, and Robert E. Jones and his wife, Madge, all of Oliver Springs; a sister, Pauline Ford and her husband, Dean, of Oliver Springs; and by several nieces and nephews. Paulette Braden Hileman has been considered a daughter by the Joneses. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Milton R. Jones and Maud Black Jones; a brother, Milton R. Jones Jr.; and by a sister-in-law, Frances Jones. The funeral was held Saturday, July 6, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Joe Copeland officiating. A graveside service was conducted Sunday, July 7, at Anderson Memorial Gardens in Clinton. |

The graveside funeral of Florence S. Jackson, 78, of 1509 N. Calhoun St., Bloomington, formerly of 1005 N. Mason St., Bloomington, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. The Rev. Richard J. Mick will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington. Mrs. Jackson died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday (March 18, 1992) at Bloomington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1913, at Danvers, a daughter of Henry and Kate Waller Jones. She married David E. Jackson Feb. 28, 1933, at Carlock. He died Sept. 26, 1974. Surviving are one son, Henry L. Jackson, Midland, Texas. One daughter preceded her in death. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington, the Order of the Eastern Star and was active in Korney Kampers Club. She was a homemaker. Memorials may be made to Lincoln State School, Lincoln. |
