- MORTON - George R. Joos, 84, of 216 S. Indiana Ave. died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Apostolic Christian Restmor.
Born April 19, 1916, in Tenney, Minn., to Ernest and Louise Aupperle Joos, he married Caroline Stetzler on Oct. 12, 1941, in Morton. He later married Geneva Borton on March 2, 1968, in Morton. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon (and Jim) Waller of Morton and Marilyn (and Ron) Hanson of Lincoln, Neb.; one stepson, Jerry Borton of Delray Beach, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Donna (and Bob) Doerr of Metamora; one brother, Sam Joos of Peoria; two sisters, Emma Ackerman of Deer Creek and Louise Winemiller of Washington; five grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.
He worked on the family farm in Minnesota until September 1936.
He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 10 years until 1947, when he started in the real estate and insurance business.
In 1950, with his brother, Fredrick Sr., he began Morton Realty Co., with offices in Morton and Washington, where he worked as a real estate and insurance broker.
He was co-developer of Washington Knolls addition, Ponderosa Estates in Washington and Joos Greenview Estates in Morton.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 318.
He was a member of Kennel Lake Sportsman Club, Illinois Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Independent Insurance Agents Association, the Peoria Board of Realtors and Society of Real Estate Appraisers.
He was a member of Grace Evangelical Mennonite Church in Morton, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Earl Cecil will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Roberts Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by his American Legion post.
Memorials may be made to his church building fund.
